Many colorful butterflies, among them black swallowtails (Papilio poylexenes ), grace prairie grasslands.

Grasshoppers like this female are important components of the prairie ecosystem as primary consumers of forbs and grasses.

An American copper (Lycaena phlaeas ) rests on wild lupine. The pugnacious little butterfly attacks anything that enters its range, even large monarchs.

One of the Prairie Peninsula’s largest native butterflies, the giant swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes ) can be seen from early July onward. This prairie-edge species feeds on wafer ash.
